Each of us faces challenges and opportunities every day where we have to make decisions. Many times the challenge/opportunity is non-consequential and we simply ignore the challenge/opportunity; we make a decision to not make a decision and take no action. There are other challenges/opportunities that when we choose to not make a decision lead to catastrophic results. Why do we choose to not find a solution to a challenge/opportunity? The reasons are diverse and reside in the individual‘s ability/confidence to find a better solution than to do nothing.
Why not just SWEEP the issue (challenge/opportunity) UNDER THE RUG and perhaps it will go away?
How many times in your life have you regretted not finding a timely solution and taking action with an issue?
The power of a peer group was reinforced this month in all of my Vistage Groups and the Accelerated Professionals program. In one Group an issue with banks was the challenge/opportunity. As an individual I have my perspective and perception, and therefore my solution to the challenge. When the Group explored the options, using all of the individual’s perspective and perceptions the final solution chosen was so robust I was absolutely amazed. By having the Group analyze potential consequences of each action we were able to formulate a plan, with actionable steps, that has a very high probability of success.
The process was repeated numerous times in all the Groups with a variety of issues. When we next meet, the individuals that had the challenge/opportunity will tell the Group what happened and what further steps need to be taken. The Group hold’s each member ACCOUNTABLE.
Def: Accountable – subject to the obligation to report, explain, or justify something; responsible, answerable.
As a leader who is holding you accountable?
Perhaps the “Power of Many – Why Outside, Unbiased Input Works” (Why Peer Advisory Groups Will Be The Next Big Thing Share on LinkedIn) is the reason Vistage members have averaged a compounded annual revenue growth of 5.8% compared to non-Vistage companies who have averaged a compounded annual revenue growth rate of -9.2% over the same period of time.
